Weaver Beaver Recommendation: I can recognize this is a good show objectively…but it wasn’t for me. And not something I’d recommend either quite honestly.
Show Description: Two strangers independently agree to become secret agents for a mysterious organization under cover as a married couple using the names "John" and "Jane" Smith. The couple must work through missions as their espionage skills, and developing relationship, are put to the test. All instructions are received from an anonymous source via text. The Smiths take on a separate mission in each of eight episodes and the show features different locales while also focusing on the marital relationship the two characters assume.
MW Review
Personally, I wasn’t excited to watch to begin with. Then it got Emmy nominations so here we are. I am not entirely sure who would like this show. It’s not my cup of tea or something I’d go out of my way to watch but objectively? I guess it’s a good show? The acting is good, the cinematography is good, the action is good, the story is fine… I just am not sure what to say about this show.
By episode 3 I was convinced that this show didn’t know what it was. Was it an action show? Was it a romance show? Was it a comedy? Or some crazy new mix of all three. By the end I realized that it is indeed a romance story with some action and comedy BUT it’s really about trauma bonding. And as someone who has GREAT experience in that area – I can say that definitively that is what this show is about.
Perhaps that is the reason why I don’t like it that much. I don’t feel like the romance is real or the relationships are real I just feel like they HAD to form those to survive. It felt like a crazy social experiment in scripted form. Also…
SPOILERS AHEAD…
…I called that Parker Posey and Wagner Moura would be the ones to try and kill them at the end of the series. One thing I did like though was the star power this season had. Alexander Skarsgard, Michaela Cole, Sarah Paulson, Ron Pearlman…the list really does go on. That was a lovely part of this. Also I want that truth serum…I wonder if its like liquid pure MDMA? Anyway watch at your own peril.
