MW Review
To me Loot feels like the comedic version of The Boys. This show is so (clap emoji) fucking (clap emoji) funny! I was watching this at work, and I felt bad for my co-workers because I literally would be GAFAWING at certain points. This show gives me all the happy feels and yet…still makes me angry? I’ll say it now and I’ll say it till the die I die – BILLIONAIRES SHOULDN’T EXIST! Hell, multi-millionaires shouldn’t exist. This hoarding wealth I just will never understand. I always remember a quote from Hello Dolly! (the movie with Babs version) “Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It's not worth a thing unless it's spread around, encouraging young things to grow.” When did we stop thinking that?
Anwhoooooooo this is about loot. But I think that quote perfectly sums up this show. The top the storyline about purchasing abandoned hotels and spaces and making them livable for houseless people (ummmm why the fuck are we not doing this in real life??????) is so great and a perfect way to laugh and point at the billionaires as they do nothing. And yet still cry because they’re doing fucking nothing.
I think my favorite parts of this season were the cameos, Nicholas’s storyline, Ainsley, and Sofia’s relationship.
SPOILERS DEFINITELY AHEAD
The cameos in this season were so fun – but by far my favorite one was Benjamin Bratt – DAMN that man could split me open, roast me on the fire, spit of me, bury me in the dirt and leave me for dead and I would say thank you – EVERY time. And in his episode Molly got to fuck Mr. Congeniality and I’m fucking jealous…of a fictional character. Isn’t the first time and 1 million percent won’t be the last.
I think Nicholas continues to be one of my favorite villains you root for. Objectively – he’s a fucking asshole. But what I love is that despite or perhaps a little bit because of his asshole-ish-ness he’s also charming as fuck and for some reason I WANT his approval. Seeing him become a bit more human this season by getting to meet his parents and see him struggle with the fact that he clearly wants to find his birth mother was refreshing. I love when people who I want to hate, win me over. The other part about Nicholas that I loved this season was when they went looking for signatures for their project and EVERYWHERE this man went, he had an ex. Like hi…. I will join that club. Joel Kim Booster if you ever read this or ever bump into my content, please know that I think you are one of the sexiest men I have EVER seen, and I personally thought you spent this season TOO clothed. BUT that wrestling scene plays in my head RENT FREE. Also please feel to reach out anytime cause I would die.
Ainsley is the funniest fucking character in this whole show. She’s the Gerry of Loot and I fucking love it. When she went to Dubai and waited for them for a whole week I LOST it. Between her complete naiveite and just general bubbliness I can’t hate her. I think season 1 I spent being like “Is this bitch for real?” and then season 2 I was like “Oh that dumb bitch. Love her.” And genuinely most of my laugh out loud moments were due to her. But I love that despite her being the Gerry there is an episode where Nicholas and Sofia help do the seating at her wedding and fucking ream one of the aunts a new asshole and it was beautiful. They love her too…just in their own way.
Sofia’s relationship – was great. I don’t think I will ever not love a romance around an uptight woman who finds someone who is the COMPLETE opposite of them to help them realize that maybe life doesn’t need to be SO serious. (Cue almost every Sandy Bullock movie ever) Also, I love O-T Fagbenle. He’s such a sweetheart and I love seeing him in things.
What I AM a little tired of (in the same vein as Abbott which will be posted soon) is the “will they/won’t they” dynamic between Molly and Arthur. I get it. Friends edged the fuck out of us and created one of the most memorable cultural moments in television history. And honestly this troupe has been going on since before then, but I feel like friends is where the troupe was “perfected”(?) for lack of a better word. But I get it. That show was a hit, Ross and Rachel’s storyline was a hit everyone loved it. I’M OVER IT! When there is a female lead, we don’t need that. She’s just fine on her own. If anything, make it her falling in love with a woman or a queer person. That would be WAY more of an interesting will they/won’t they. Its taboo still (for some fucking reason – looking at you MAGA people) and adds an element of danger and mystery. But this cis straight will they/won’t they is tired to me. Especially given that this show started off with her getting cheated on and divorced. Like can’t we give her something else to help move the narrative along? I mean she has the foundation, but does she need man drama too? Maybe (definitely) I’m a bitter slut who thinks he’s never going to find someone BUT I just don’t understand why this is a troupe we need to have in EVERY series. Regardless I’m excited to see season 3 and start us off in Korea!!!
